THE OTOLITH BIOMETRY OF STRIPED PIGGY (Pomadasys stridens (Forsskal, 1775) INHABITING NORTHEASTERN MEDITERRANEAN

Hülya GİRGİN1 , Asiye BAŞUSTA 2

In the study, the relationships between fish size and otolith dimensions of the striped piggy (Pomadasys stridens) inhabiting Gulf of İskenderun were investigated. Fish samples were obtained by commercial trawler from İskenderun Bay between January 2022 and September 2022. A total of 186 Pomadasys stridens individuals were used for this purpose. Total lengths (TL) and weights (g) of striped piggs were measured with an accuracy of 0.1cm and 0.01g respectively. After that P. stridens specimens were dissected and then their right and left otoliths were extracted. Otolith lengths and width were measured by digital caliper with an accuracy of 0.01mm and weights were taken with a digital scales nearest 0.0001g. It was decided that there is a linear relationship between total length–otolith length and total length–otolith width. The relationship between total length–otolith weight of the striped piggy was y=0.0075x-0.0582 (R2=0.6625) detected to be exponential.
