İmge, büyük bir yıkımın ardından ortaya çıkan oluşumdur. Bu yıkım melez bir gerçekliğin oluşmasına neden olmaktadır. Her sanatçı hybrid formlardan yeni bir gerçeklik dünyası inşa etmektedir. Sanatçıların inşa ettiği bu yeni gerçeklik alanları bazı durumların ön plana çıkmasına neden olmaktadır. İşte bu bağlamda Kerry James Marshall eserleriyle yarattığı o yeni gerçeklik alanlarında siyahi ırkı ön plana çıkmıştır. Yani aslında siyahi olan sanatçı yaratıcılığını yine siyahilere borçludur. Siyahların beyaz kültürün egemen olduğu toplumlarda yaşadığı ötekileştirme sanatçının temel konusudur. ‘De Style’ eseri bu kaygılarla ortaya çıkmış bir çalışmadır. Eserin ismi Mondrian’nın soyut sanat hareketine bir göndermedir. Eserde imgeler tamamen siyah bir leke olarak karşımıza geçmiş ve ötekileştirme duygusunu bu sefer bize hissettirmişlerdir. Öteki konumuna düşen izleyici bu yolla kendisini derin bir sorgulamanın içerisinde bulmuştur. Peki, siyah imgelerin gözleri ne durumdadır? Siyah imgelerin gözleri, tüm bunların yanı sıra bizi kıskaca alarak sorguya çekmiştir. Çünkü bize karşı üstün olan siyah imgeler ve onların gözleridir. İmgelerin gözlerindeki beyazlık varlığın varoluş noktasıdır. Öze açılan kapıdır.

The image is a formation that comes into existence after a major destruction. This destruction leads to a hybrid reality being formed. Therefore, each artist constructs a new world of reality from the hybrid forms. These new reality spaces the artists have constructed cause various cases to come to the forefront. It is in this context that Kerry James Marshall brings the black race to the forefront in the new reality spaces he has created with his work. Actually, the artist who is black, owes his creativity to other black people. The marginalization black people experience in societies where white culture is dominant is the artist’s main theme. His work ‘De Style’ is created with these concerns. The work’s name is a reference to Mondrian’s abstract art movement. The images in the work face us as a completely black mark and this time give us the sense of marginalization. The viewers who have become the other, thus find themselves in a deep state of questioning. Then what of the eyes of the black images? Alongside all this, the eyes of the black images have seized and interrogated us. Because what is superior to us are the black images and their eyes. The white in the image’s eyes are the being’s point of existence. It is the door that opens to the self.
