DETERMINATION OF THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF POLY(4-DIETHANOLAMINOMETHYL STYRENE–co-STYRENE) BY INVERSE GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY TECHNIQUE

Aslışah AÇIKSES1 , Mustafa Hamdi KARAGÖZ2

In this work, the thermodynamic properties of (4-diethanolaminomethyl styrene%38-co-styrene)were determined by inverse gas chromatography (IGC) for polymer-solvent systems. A series of alcohols and hydrocarbons were used as solvents between temperatures (333-473 K). The specific retention volumes (Vgo) of the solvents were determined by injecting each solvent separately into the column. To determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymer both the alcohol and hydrocarbon plotted graphics (1/T; lnVgo) for both the alcohol and hydrocarbons. In both graphs, the glass transition temperature of P(DEAMSt 38% -co-St) was found to be 98 oC. The adsorption heat (?Ha) at temperatures below Tg and ?G1s, ?H1s and ?S1s values of the sorption at temperatures above Tg were calculated. The polymer-solvent interactions , , ?G1? and ?H1? for the infinite diluted state were determined. The solubility parameters (?2) of the copolymer were also found at the same temperature range. The solubility parameters (?2) of P(DEAMSt%38-co-St) were found to decrease with the temperature increased. All thermodynamic results are based on the expected values for the polymer-nonsolvent systems of the probes used. The probes used were found to be not solvents for the copolymer under the glass transition temperature.
