Bu çalışma ile bilgi ve teknoloji çağında öğrencide bulunması gereken konuşma becerilerinin geliştirilmesinde İngilizce ders kitaplarının rolü üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu amaçla, öncelikle konuşma becerilerinin kazandırılmasında ders kitaplarının etkililiğine yönelik yapılan araştırmalar ve bilimsel makaleler taranarak konu hakkında literatür taraması yapılmıştır. Ayrıca bu çalışmada, konuşma becerilerinin geliştirilmesi için bir ders kitabında bulunması gereken etkinlikler, yardımcı materyaller, çağdaş yöntem ve teknikler, içeriğin yeterliliği ve kitabın öğrenci düzeyine uygunluğuna ilişkin uzman ve öğretmen görüşlerine başvurulmuştur. Çalışma sonucunda elde edilen veriler 4. ve 5. sınıf İngilizce öğretmenleri ile yapılan görüşmelerden yazılı yorumlar alınması yoluyla toplanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın sonuçları ile ders kitaplarının öğretmenler tarafından konuşma becerilerine ilişkin güçlü olarak algılanan ve geliştirilmesi gerektiği düşünülen yanları ortaya konulmuştur. Elde edilen sonuçların diğer İngilizce ders kitaplarının hazırlanmasına da ışık tutacağı düşünülmektedir.

This study focuses on the role of English coursebooks in improving speaking skills students need to have at this age of technology and knowledge. For this reason, researches and scientific articles about the effectiveness of the coursebook are first searched and literature searching has been made. Moreover, with the help of experts’ conception; English teachers’ views about the activities, additional materials and modern methods and techniques the coursebook should have; adequacy of the content and relevance of the coursebook to the level of students are applied in this study. The data has been collected by taking written comments from the interviews with 4th and 5th grades English teachers at Primary schools. This study explores the strengths and limitations of the coursebook as perceived by English teachers for improving speaking skills. The findings of the study will hopefully shed light on the preparation of other English coursebooks.
