THE KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES OF NURSING AND ELDERLY CARE STUDENTS TOWARDS CANCER PATIENTS AND THE FACTORS PREDICTING THESE VARIABLES

Tuba METİN1 , Özlem UĞUR2

Students studying in nursing and elderly care departments are today's representatives of future health care teams. The knowledge and attitudes of health professionals are thought to be related to the quality of care given to patients with cancer. This study aims to examine the knowledge and attitudes of nursing and elderly care students towards cancer patients and the factors predicting these variables. The study is descriptive and cross-sectional. Participants consisted of nursing and elderly care students. Personal Information Form, Cancer Information Burden Scale and Attitude Towards Cancer Scale were used for data collection. Data were analyzed by multiple linear regression method. 160 students participated in the study. The mean cancer knowledge burden scores of nursing and elderly care students were 18.08±1.2 and 18.11±1.8, respectively, and the mean cancer attitude scores were 127.30±4.7 and 135.90±5.0, respectively. It was determined that the knowledge burden levels of nursing and elderly care students towards cancer patients were close to each other and the attitude levels of elderly care students towards cancer were higher.
