SOSYAL İKİLEM BELGESELİNDE DİJİTAL GERÇEKLİĞİN İNŞASI

Şule Yenigün Altın1

Bu çalışmada, 2020 yılında yayımlanan The Social Dilemma belgeselinde sosyal medya gerçekliğinin nasıl inşa edildiği eleştirel söylem analizi perspektifinden incelenmiştir.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF DIGITAL REALITY IN THE DOCUMENTARY THE SOCIAL DILEMMA

Şule Yenigün Altın1

This study examines how the reality of social media is constructed in the 2020 documentary The Social Dilemma from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. The study aims to reveal how social media platforms, users, and the power relations between platforms and users are represented in the documentary. To this end, expert opinions, narratives of former technology industry employees, and dramatized scenes presented in the documentary were analyzed. The findings indicate that social media platforms are represented not as neutral communication tools, but as economic structures that monitor, predict, and shape user behavior. Users, in turn, are positioned both as subjects vulnerable to manipulation and as sources of data that enable platforms to generate economic value. Algorithms are portrayed as mechanisms of power that influence individual choices and broader social processes. The study demonstrates that the documentary frames the phenomenon of social media within the interconnected contexts of technology, economic interests, and power relations
