PERFORMANCE, DURABILITY, AND SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS OF POLYMER-BASED COMPOSITES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Belkıs ELYİĞİT 1 , Cevdet Emin EKINCI2

This study comprehensively examines the use of polymer-based composite materials in civil engineering within the framework of performance, durability, and sustainability. Corrosion, fatigue, and environmentally induced deterioration commonly observed in conventional construction materials constitute significant challenges for the safety and economic sustainability of infrastructure systems. In this context, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, which provide high specific strength, low weight, superior corrosion resistance, and design flexibility, are considered an innovative alternative. The study analyzes the mechanical properties, long-term behavior under environmental conditions, and service-life performance of FRP systems based on findings reported in the literature. In addition, life-cycle cost and environmental sustainability criteria are comparatively evaluated. The findings indicate that although FRP composites involve relatively high initial costs, they offer substantial long-term economic and structural advantages by reducing maintenance requirements. However, limitations associated with fire resistance and uncertainties regarding long-term performance remain major research challenges that require further investigation.
