OTOLITH BIOMETRY OF Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843) IN THE UPPER EUPHRATES RIVER BASIN

Mustafa DÜŞÜKCAN1 , Mücahit EROĞLU 2 , Yaşar Yücekaya3

In this study, the relationship between fish length and otolith biometry of Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843) caught from Özlüce Dam Lake, in the upper Euphrates River Basin, was investigated. Sex differences were determined after measuring the total lengths of a total of 124 (69 female, 55 male) fish samples. The right and left otoliths were removed from the fish and prepared for measurement. The length (OU) and width (OG) of the otoliths were measured on two axes using a computer-assisted imaging analysis program. Otolith weights were weighed on a weighing device with an accuracy of 0.0001g. Statistically differences were found to be insignificant in right and left otolith measurements in male and female individuals. Total length in the all population was measured between 176.00-436.00mm. For the all population, OU:1.38-2.13mm, OG:0.99-1.53mm and OA:3.00-8.80mg were measured. Strong positive relationships were detected between total length and otolith measurements in the all population.
