Bu çalışmanın amacı, Amartya Sen’in yoksulluk konusundaki görüşlerini tartışmak ve Sen tarafından geliştirilen Sen Yoksulluk İndeksi’ni, Türkiye’nin 2004-2006 dönemlerindeki iki, dört ve altı kişilik hanehalkları için hesaplamaktır. Analiz sonuçlarına göre, Gini katsayısı yerine kullanılan Değişme katsayısı, iki kişilik hanede ortalama 0.65 iken, dört ve altı kişilik hanelerde ortalama 0.78 ve 0.63 dür. 2004-2006 dönemleri için hesaplanan Sen Yoksulluk İndeksi, Yoksul Kişi Oranı ve Yoksulluk Açığı Oranı hem yıllar geçtikçe hem de hanehalkı büyüklüğü arttıkça artmaktadır.

The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the thoughts of Amartya Sen on poverty and to calculate Sen’s Poverty Index developed by Sen for the households of two, four and six persons in Turkey over the period 2004-2006. The estimation results indicate that the coefficient of variation, used instead of Gini coefficient, is found to be 0.65 on average for households of two persons. On the other hand, the coefficients of variation are estimated to be 0.78 and 0.63 on average for the households of four and six persons, respectively. Sen’s Poverty Index tends to increase over time (on an annual basis) and with an increase in the size of the households in Turkey over the period 2004-2006.
