Bu araştırmanın amacı, ilköğretim ikinci kademe öğrencilerinin atom kavramına ilişkin sahip oldukları epistemolojik orijinli kavram yanılgıları ile atom kavramının eski çağdan günümüze gelinceye kadarki süreçte karşılaşılan epistemolojik engeller arasında varsa bir ilişki ve/veya benzerlik kurmaktır. Bu amaçla araştırmacılar tarafından geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışmaları yapılmış beş adet açık uçlu sorudan oluşan kavram yanılgıları tespit anketi 105 ilköğretim öğrencisine uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca 20 öğrenci ile görüşme yapılarak konu hakkında daha ayrıntılı veriler toplanmıştır. Atom kavramı ile ilgili literatürde tespit edilen epistemolojik engeller ve öğrencilerin aynı konuya ilişkin sahip oldukları kavram yanılgıları arasında bir karşılaştırma yapılmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen sonuçlara göre, öğrencilerin atom kavramına ilişkin bazı düşünceleri ile atom kavramının tarihsel sürecindeki epistemolojik engelleri arasında benzerlikler olduğu gözlenmiştir.

The aim of this research is to establish a link and/or similarity, if there is any, between the misconceptions with epistemological origin of the students on atom concept and the epistemological obstacles which have been encountered since early times on atom concept. To accomplish this aim a misconceptions diagnostic test composed of 5 open-ended questions of which reliability and validity studies had been done administered to 105 primary school students. Moreover, detailed data on the topic had been collected trough interviews with 20 students. A comparison between the epistemological obstacles on atom concept in the literature and the misconceptions of the students on the same subject has been done. As a result of the research it has been found out that there are some similarities between the students’ various ideas and epistemological obstacles of atom concept in the course of its history.
