İletişim araçlarının tarihsel olarak gelişim süreçlerinin şu aşamaları izlediği tespit edilmiştir: İnsanlar öncelikle kaynağı kendileri olan ve doğal olarak çıkarabildikleri seslerini kullanmışlar; daha sonra doğayı tanımaya başladıklarında taş, ağaç ve kemikten faydalanarak şekil ve işaretleri, toprak ve doğayı kullanarak yazıyı; sembol ve simgeleri oluşturarak bir dizge olan alfabeyi; düşüncelerini karşısındaki insanlara aktarabilmek için kağıdı; insanlık tarihinin en büyük icadlarından biri olan matbaayı; sanayileşmeyi gerçekleştirip elektrik yardımıyla telgraf ve telefonu; I. Dünya Savaşı`nda etkin şekilde haberleşme ve propaganda aracı olarak kullanılan radyoyu ve yine II. Dünya Savaşı`nda görsel ve işitsel bir iletişim aracı olan televizyonla ve nihayet 20. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren internet, sosyal medya ve blog kullanımının zeminini hazırlayacak olan bilgisayar teknolojisiyle birlikte iletişim araçlarını geliştirmiştir.
