Bu araştırmanın amacı, İzmir il merkezinde bulunan liselerin kütüphanelerinin içinde bulundukları durumu betimlemek, gereksinimleri karşılama durumunu ve sorunları ortaya koymaktır. Araştırma İzmir kent merkezinde on bir genel lise üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler hem nitel hem de nicel veri toplama yöntemleriyle toplanmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen sonuçlara göre, okul kütüphaneleri genellikle fiziksel alan ve kaynak bakımından yetersiz kalmakta, istenilen özellikleri taşımamaktadır. Okul kütüphanelerinde kullanılır durumda CD, disket, video kaset, slayt vb. kaynaklar yoktur. Sadece bir okulun kütüphanesinde öğretmenlerin ve öğrencilerin kullanması için internete bağlı bilgisayarlar bulunmaktadır. Öğrencilerin yalnızca %18,6’sına göre okullarında kütüphaneye önem verilmektedir. Dört okulda öğrencilerden kütüphaneye üyelik için ücret alınmaktadır. Öğrencilerin %59,3’ü okul kütüphanesine hiç gitmemiştir. Okul kütüphaneleri çoğunlukla kütüphane dışı etkinlik amacıyla kullanılmaktadır.

The purpose of this research is to describe the present conditions of the high school libraries in İzmir, to what extent their needs are met and what their problems are. The research was conducted on eleven public high schools in the central town of İzmir. The data was collected through both quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of the research show that school libraries are insufficient in terms of physical conditions and sources, and that they do not have the desired characteristics. Such sources as CDs, floppy diskettes, video tapes or slides are not available at school libraries. Only one of the school libraries has a computer with the Internet access for teachers’ and students’ use. Only 18.6% of the students think that importance is attached to the libraries in their schools. The students in four of the schools have to pay for membership to the library. 59.3% of the students state that they have never gone to their school libraries. School libraries are usually used for the purposes not related to library.
